When I was named the winner, I literally could not believe it.

When I was named the winner, I literally could not believe it.

Entering the final challenge, I was extremely nervous. Jon and Alexis were my biggest competitors from the beginning and they do fantastic tattoos every week, but it felt amazing knowing that I made it to the end. I was so honored to stand with Alexis and Jon and I'm proud to have been able to work alongside them.

When I heard that we were creating three tattoos for the challenge instead of one, I was kinda stoked, but I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me. I was also a little shocked when my previous skins came back for another one of my tattoos, but I was stoked that they wanted more work from me.

Knowing what I know now, if I could go back I would have played a bit more competitively. The politics in voting were brutal and the flash challenge advantages were pretty helpful. But at the end of this competition, I learned that patience and hard work can pay off. I have made a conscience effort to be a more positive person in recent years and look where it has brought me! I'm honored, humbled, and stoked beyond belief. I am grateful for my friend's and family's support.

When I was named the winner, I literally could not believe it. It was so surreal. I hadn't felt that much relief over anything in my whole life. I have been working really hard at this for years and I've had a lot happen in the past two years. This was finally something I could be very proud of and take home to my wife.

I am SO grateful for my clientele, friends, and family. The fast paced, high intensity atmosphere of the show really made me realize just how nice life is at my shop, MD Tattoo Studio. I get to work at a comfortable pace and create my own custom artwork for my clients. After getting used to the time limits of the challenges, I think I'm a bit faster at tattooing now. I'm reminded that it's okay to slow down and take my time, which is so nice. I am stoked that now I have some new amazing friends from other corners of the country. I've already hung out with Jon and Alexis since the show and even did a guest spot at Roman's new shop! I think we will all be pals forever. We experienced a crazy time together, one that none of us will ever forget. I'm grateful for that. I'm grateful that I get to make art for a living.

Best Ink only reinforced my desire to work even harder to be the best tattoo artist that I can be. Joe really pushed us and it helped a lot. I'm forever thankful for that.

Things might be different if Roman were still here.

When I walked into the recording studio, I felt at home. I've played music most of my life. I designed simple demo art for my previous bands a couple times, but not fully rendered album art. My inspiration for the Flash Challenge was mannequin zombie domination!

I've done a few fun commemorative tattoos of rad artists. I have done a couple of Michael Jackson pieces, a Billy Idol portrait, and some pieces inspired by great artists such as Dali, Munch, Alphonse Mucha, and more. When I found out I was going to be doing a tribute tattoo of Michael Jackson, I was really excited as I am a big fan and have done a few other MJ tattoos before.

As for my inspiration behind the tattoo, Michael is a rare "larger than life" figure in society. He is obviously an icon and somewhat of a glorified man, which to me, is similar to the glorification of religious figures in history. I thought it would be cool to do something like that of a Catholic saint piece of art for this particular tattoo.

I wish I had more time for the Ink Challenge but then we found out Jermaine Jackson was the guest judge. He was the only non-tattoo artist guest judge that I was okay with at that point.

It felt nice to win the Flash Challenge and Ink Challenge this week, but I'm still on edge because Jon and Alexis are excellent artists. I feel like me, Alexis, and Jon are a good representation of the best tattoo artists in the competition. Things might be different if Roman were still here, but I feel very strongly that the best artists are left on the competition.

I typically pride myself on making quality art and this challenge was a disaster from the beginning.

The first thing I thought when I walked into the fashion studio was, “Uh oh.” I do not have any experience with fashion design. In the past, I have designed graphics for t-shirts, but that is it.

I chose the tiger for the Flash Challenge. The biggest challenge of creating artwork on the leather boot was that the materials were really cheap and not easy to work with together. My least favorite boot design was my own because I typically pride myself on making quality art and this challenge was a disaster from the beginning. I like showcasing my best work and this clearly wasn’t my best. We all did the best we could. Art is subjective.

I was pretty stoked when the skins came in with their pets because I knew we would be tattooing images of animals for the next challenge. I didn't really want to get the client who brought his pet snake. Aesthetically, it isn't quite as dynamic for me to make a cool tattoo out of. The most difficult part about tattooing animal imagery is capturing their skin or fur. It is an effect that can easily be done wrong.

I was a bit surprised when I met Kitty. I didn't know if she was legit or not. I was bummed when she told me she only wanted pink in the tattoo. I kept getting stuck with clients who had all these gnarly stipulations for their tattoos and I felt I was not being given the chance to showcase my true ability. This was just another case of a client who wouldn't take the advice of the professional. Normally, I would have said no to a request like this, but I figured I was too far along in the competition so I just decided to apply more black ink to pump up the contrast. I don't think it was fair to me that my client was the only one with such a drastic stipulation. Trust the professionals.

I think Charlie's work and design was the poorest of the bunch. Her ideas were cool but they were excessive and she fell short in the execution. Jon and Alexis both nailed it this time! I knew one of them would win. I thought Alexis's piece was the most creative but Jon's was just a bit more solid. I was stoked for both of them for doing such a fantastic job.

Being in the bottom 3 this week, I was confident that my tattoo was clean and solid, but I wasn't too sure how the judges would break it down. It was, after all, completely pink and I did not know if they would hold that against me.

I don’t think that any one person can master all genres of tattooing.

I was a bit bummed by the Flash Challenge where we had to sketch Kim. It was terribly bright and she moved a lot. I treated it as a simple study, and I was relatively happy with my sketch. It was tough, given the circumstances and conditions. When they told us the advantage would be the only vote at elimination I thought, this should be interesting.

To make a good portrait tattoo, you really need a good reference photo. My photo was terrible for the Ink Challenge. It had no definitive detail and no good values to decipher from in the photo.

I agreed with Joe when he told us we all needed to start performing. I also agreed to an extent that to be a good tattoo artist you need to be able to do every type of tattoo. Great tattoo artists can do a bit of everything but I don’t think that any one person can master all genres of tattooing. But I certainly think being well rounded and versatile in your artistry will help you in being a versatile tattoo artist.

I didn't mind being in the bottom three because I knew I wasn't going home. Joe knew my reference photo was bad and I still did a nice tattoo.

I wanted to be given the chance to show large scale, quality work.

I just wanted draw to something cool for the Flash Challenge. I gave up caring what anyone thought and drew what made sense to me. Dean was cool. He seemed stoked on my sketch so I was happy with his kind words.

I wasn’t so nervous about the Ink Challenge. Most first time clients are surprised that it doesn’t hurt as bad as they anticipated. But I was pretty annoyed when I found out we had to ink two skins. I wanted to be given the chance to show large scale, quality work. My skins wanted simple henna tattoos. I kept the designs strong in their simplicity and prepared myself for the limited time given to do two pieces. I was very confident with my work and I knew I wasn’t going home.

Jess going home was not a surprise. She’s a really sweet girl and has potential to be a good tattoo artist, but she has issues.

When Roman announced that he was leaving, I really wanted to go with him.
242

My wife, who was at the time my fiancé, and my mom were big inspirations for me during the Flash Challenge. The concept of marriage was on my mind and that’s what I went with. It was a hard challenge though. Markers do not work well on canvas. So I wasn't able to draw or render anything as well as I wanted to. I thought about joining Roman when he quit! The tools we were given were not easy to work with. Most of us agreed it was all one big mess.

When we were given the Ink Challenge, I was looking forward to it. I had a client who came from Canada to get a memorial portrait tattoo of his daughter who died from a degenerative disease. The strength and optimism that he and his family showed was inspiring. He is a great guy who truly loves his family and lovely daughter. I was honored to do that tattoo.

I have to be honest it’s intimidating when Joe comes over to critique our tattoos! Joe is a pretty intense guy. I value and respect his opinion because he is brutally honest and holds tattooing dear to his heart like me. I know he was analyzing every detail of my work so it was definitely a bit nerve-wracking each time.

I was pretty pleased with my tattoo. My client asked for a Japanese-style fu dog tattoo. Even though I love Japanese tattoo art, I am not well versed in all of the strict rules that make up proper Japanese tattoos. I did my best to design my own version of the fu dog while trying to make it flow with my client's other tattoos.

I wasn't surprised by the judge’s feedback. I did nice clean work. I did what I was asked and utilized my time accordingly. The time allotted was minimal but I wanted to make a statement with this piece: big, bold, and vibrant. I felt that I did a nice tattoo that will hold for life.

When Roman announced that he was leaving, I really wanted to go with him. We discussed leaving together because we both were tired of the drama. But I decided I wanted to stay. I told him that we made it this far and that we could make it to the finale. He missed his kids and I couldn't talk him out of it. I was bummed because he is my buddy and my biggest competition in the show. I wanted to go to the end with him and do some biomechanical, color portraits and illustrative stuff against him.

Jon and Alexis are my biggest competition at this point. They are doing super clean and really nice tattoos each time. Charlie is smart and knows how to vote and manipulate, though, so she's one to look out for.

I was very surprised by the critique I received.
242

Coming in to the Flash Challenge, I did not like the idea of painting on bodies. I had never used makeup before so it was hard to create the effect I wanted. It was a difficult challenge because your canvas is standing and breathing. I prefer flat canvas on a sturdy easel. Honestly, I wanted to leave at that point.

I felt better going into the Ink Challenge. I love tattooing all sorts of pin ups in varying styles. I had a really great idea for my first skin so when they changed our skins at the last minute, I was bummed. But I felt really good about my pin up tattoo so I was taken aback by the judge’s feedback. My client asked for a curvy, cartoon-style girl and I did just that. Hannah was quick to point out anatomy flaws, but my intent was to create a dynamic cartoon girl with a quirky spirit. I gave her an enlarged face and curvy hips to accentuate my client's wishes.

I think the judges and Hannah's critique was based on personal aesthetic taste rather than looking at it as a well-drawn and well executed tattoo. Joe Capobianco is known for tweaking the anatomy of all his girls to make them dynamic and fun. So needless to say, I was very surprised by the critique I received. I wasn’t expecting that response.

When Kyle called me fake before we voted, I thought he was joking at first. When I realized he was not joking, I knew he was tripping from the pressures of the competition like the rest of us. I think he just snapped and I was the guy he saw first.

Personally, I voted for the tattoos that were overall the weakest. In the end, Roman deserved to win because he did a great tattoo, period. It was fair that he received a new skin. His skin bailed and that’s not his fault. It was her loss. He did a great job.

Tattooing for me all started with punk rock, rock and roll, and skating.
242

<!--break-->

I knew I wanted to be covered in tattoos. I was always drawing and creating as a kid and I went to college to study art. I played in bands and started getting tattoos and it became addictive. It slowly developed from collecting them to wanting to do them.

Now I’ve been tattooing for 6 years. The first tattoo I got was a sacred heart on my arm that says "live". It reminds me to truly love life and live like there is no tomorrow. Now I have a lot of tattoos and I'm always adding to the collection. The first tattoo I ever gave someone was an old school traditional skull and crossbones on my brother's friend. It was awesome and scary. It came out pretty decent too. I'd love to see it today.

I like tattooing anything thought provoking and a bit different. I love all genres of tattooing and I like to sort of combine elements of different styles to make my own vibrant, bold, interesting work. It keeps my job fresh, every single day. Tattoos that appear simple are usually very tough. You can see every mistake in a simple tattoo. I have a lot of respect for the guys that do amazingly clean tattoos that look like a sticker was printed on the skin.

I'm just trying to get my artwork out there; whether it’s my tattoo work, illustrations, or painting. By being on this show, or hopefully by winning, I hope to be able to really provide for my family. My biggest goal is to always do clean work, push my personal limits, and to take care of my family with and through my artwork.

If I could tattoo anyone it would be my dad. He introduced me to rock and roll, and that started it all for me.

When we were asked to reinvent the butterfly, I just drew something that I knew would be different than the typical tattoo looking butterfly. When the judges loved it, I was stoked and shocked.

It was great that I won the ink challenge. I was shocked. My biggest competition going forward I think is Roman. He is a really talented dude with a solid track record for doing nice work.
